It is a common misconception that the root system of a tree is a reflection of the tree canopy, extending below the ground as deep as the tree is tall. Tree roots actually spread out relatively close to the soil surface and support the tree much like the base of a wine glass.

This becomes painfuly apparent when even one structural root is cut at the surface. The tree loses stability and fails at the root plate.
